If you just need a cable and don’t want to spend an hour reading specifications online, walk into our Perth Road shop and we’ll hand you the right one.
USB Cable Types Explained
USB-C is the modern standard. The oval connector that goes in either way up. Used by most new phones, tablets, laptops, and accessories. If your device was made in the last few years, this is probably what you need. We stock USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C cables.
USB-A is the rectangular connector that’s been around for decades. Still on most desktop computers, older laptops, chargers, and accessories. One end of most cables is still USB-A even when the other end is USB-C.
USB-B is the square-ish connector used by printers, some external hard drives, and audio equipment. Not as common as it used to be, but we stock them for folk who need to connect a printer.
Micro USB is the smaller connector used by older phones, Bluetooth speakers, budget headphones, and various accessories. Being phased out in favour of USB-C but still widely needed.
We stock standard USB cables and USB PD (Power Delivery) cables. PD cables support fast charging on compatible devices. If your phone or laptop supports fast charging, you need a PD cable to get the full speed.
USB-C Cables
USB-C is becoming universal. Phones, laptops, tablets, monitors, headphones, game controllers. Almost everything new uses USB-C.
But not all USB-C cables are equal. A cheap USB-C cable might only support slow charging and USB 2.0 data speeds. A quality USB-C cable supports fast charging (PD) and faster data transfer.
We stock quality USB-C cables in different lengths. Short ones for charging from a power bank, standard 1m cables, and longer 2-3m cables for reaching across a desk.
USB-A Cables
USB-A isn’t going anywhere yet. Most desktop computers, monitors, and chargers still have USB-A ports. You’ll need USB-A cables or adapters for a while yet.
We stock USB-A to USB-C cables (the most common combination right now), USB-A to Micro USB, USB-A to USB-B (printers), and USB-A extension cables.
