Popped in with my broken phone, the team explained what I had broken and what would need to be replaced. Explained the use of genuine parts, correct model and colour matching. Parts took a day longer to arrive, but there was a storm so yknow, these things happen, popped in when parts arrived with phone, an hour later it was ready for collection. Looks better than new! Excellent, good quality and friendly service, highly recommended!

Your MacBook screen is cracked, black, flickering, or showing colours that look completely wrong. Whether it happened from a drop, something closing on the keyboard, or it just went dark one morning with no warning, the good news is your data is safe and the screen can be replaced.

We replace MacBook screens at our Perth Road workshop in Dundee. Faster turnaround than the Apple Store, without the Genius Bar queue or the wait while they send it away. We use quality replacement displays that match Apple’s original specifications for resolution, colour accuracy, and build quality. Your MacBook should look and perform exactly as it did when you first unboxed it.

MacBook screens are more complex than regular laptop screens. Apple integrates the display, glass, housing, webcam, antenna cables, and hinges into a single precision assembly. That means screen replacements need Apple-specific tooling and experience. We’ve been doing it long enough to know the quirks of every model, from the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro through to the latest M4 machines.

Types of MacBook Screen Damage We Repair

We’ve seen everything from hairline cracks to completely shattered displays in our Perth Road workshop. Here’s what comes through the door most often from folk across Dundee, Broughty Ferry, and the surrounding area.

Cracked LCD Displays

The classic. Dropped on the library stairs, stood on, closed with a pen on the keyboard, or fell off the couch. The screen might still work behind the cracks, but using it is like trying to read through a broken window. Sometimes it’s just the outer glass, but more often the LCD underneath is damaged too. Either way, the whole display assembly needs replacing.

We see a lot of MacBooks where the owner cracked the screen weeks ago and has been squinting past it, hoping it wouldn’t get worse. It usually does. Cracks spread with temperature changes and normal use. A small crack in the corner today can become a web of lines across the whole display by next month. If you can still see the desktop, your data is fine, but get it sorted before the crack reaches somewhere critical.

From Our Workshop

A Dundee University student dropped her MacBook Pro down the library stairs rushing to submit an assignment. Screen completely shattered. She was convinced it would cost a fortune. We sourced a quality Retina display, fitted it next day, and it cost her less than half what Apple quoted. She submitted on time.

Black Screen or No Display

You press the power button and hear the fans, maybe see the keyboard backlight, but the screen shows nothing. This could be the LCD panel itself, a faulty backlight, or a loose connection between the screen and the logic board. We diagnose which one before quoting, because a loose cable is a much cheaper fix than a panel replacement.

A quick test: connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. If the external display works, the MacBook itself is fine and it’s definitely the screen or its connection. If the external monitor also shows nothing, the issue might be deeper than the display. We test both scenarios in our workshop as part of the initial diagnosis.

Black screen issues sometimes happen after a macOS update or after the MacBook has been in a bag for a while and overheated. If resetting the SMC and NVRAM doesn’t fix it, the display hardware needs attention. Don’t keep forcing restarts hoping it’ll come back. Bring it in and we’ll identify exactly what’s causing it.

Flickering and Colour Distortion

Colours going wrong, random lines appearing, the display flickering like a dodgy fluorescent bulb. It usually starts subtly and gets worse. Don’t ignore it. What starts as a minor irritation will eventually make your MacBook unusable. It’s often the display cable or the panel starting to fail.

On the 2016 to 2019 MacBook Pro models, flickering is sometimes caused by a failing display flex cable where it bends over the hinge. Apple calls this “flexgate” and it’s caused by the cable being slightly too short for repeated opening and closing. The backlight starts cutting out at certain screen angles before eventually failing completely. On some models this can be repaired by replacing the cable rather than the full display, which saves money.

Colour distortion where half the screen turns pink, green, or shows vertical lines usually means the LCD panel itself is failing. This gets worse over time and won’t fix itself. If your MacBook display looks like it’s been through a kaleidoscope, the panel needs replacing.

Backlight Failure

Your MacBook screen looks like it’s working but it’s so dim you can barely see anything. Shine a torch on the screen. If you can make out your desktop, that’s backlight failure. The panel itself is fine but the light behind it has failed. On some models this can be repaired without replacing the entire display assembly.

Backlight issues on Intel MacBook Pros can sometimes be caused by a blown backlight fuse on the logic board rather than a screen problem. This is a cheaper fix if we can identify the fuse and replace it. On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 onwards), the backlight circuit is different and failure is less common, but when it happens the display assembly is usually the culprit.

If the backlight only fails at certain angles when you open or close the lid, that points to the flexgate cable issue mentioned above. We’ll test at multiple angles during diagnosis to pinpoint the cause.

Water Damage to Display

Spilled coffee, tea, or something else on your MacBook? Don’t try to turn it on to check if the screen still works. Power it off immediately and bring it to us. The sooner we get to it, the better the chance of saving the display without a full replacement. For logic board liquid damage, see our MacBook liquid damage repair page.

Liquid damage to the display often shows up as blotchy patches, discolouration behind the glass, or areas where the backlight has stopped working. Sometimes it appears immediately, sometimes it takes a few days as moisture creeps between the glass and the LCD layers. Even “minor” spills can cause issues if liquid runs down behind the display assembly.

We open the MacBook, assess the extent of the damage, clean any corrosion, and determine whether the screen can be saved or needs replacing. If it’s just the display and the logic board is clean, a screen replacement sorts it. If liquid has reached the board as well, we’ll deal with both. The key is getting it to us quickly. Every hour of delay lets corrosion spread further.

Staingate: Anti-Reflective Coating Wear

Your MacBook screen has permanent-looking smudges or patches that won’t wipe clean no matter what you use. It’s not dirt. It’s the anti-reflective coating delaminating from the glass. Apple calls it “anti-reflective coating wear.” It’s a known issue on Retina MacBooks from 2013 to 2017, though it can appear on newer models too.

This doesn’t need a full screen replacement. The coating can be carefully removed, leaving you with a slightly more reflective but perfectly usable display. Much cheaper than a new screen assembly. If the wear is severe and you want it looking factory-fresh, we can replace the screen, but many folk are happy with the coating removal once they know it’s an option.

Apple ran a repair programme for this issue on certain models, but it expired in 2022 for most machines. If your MacBook is affected and Apple won’t help, bring it to us. We can remove the damaged coating or replace the screen depending on how bad it is and what you’d prefer.

True Tone and Display Pairing

The question every MacBook owner asks before a screen replacement: will I lose True Tone? True Tone is Apple’s automatic colour temperature adjustment that makes the display look natural in different lighting conditions.

On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3, M4), True Tone requires calibration data paired between the display and the logic board. If the screen is replaced without reprogramming this pairing, True Tone gets disabled. Your MacBook still works perfectly without it, but the display won’t automatically adjust its warmth to match the room lighting.

With Apple’s Repair Assistant (available in macOS Tahoe and later), True Tone can now be recalibrated after a third-party screen replacement using an original-spec display. We use this tool where applicable to restore True Tone functionality after fitting your new screen.

The webcam (FaceTime camera) is built into the display assembly on most MacBooks. We test it as part of every screen replacement to make sure it’s working properly with the new panel. On some models the webcam cable needs to be transferred from your old display to the new one, which we handle during the replacement.

Night Shift and auto-brightness are separate from True Tone and work regardless of whether the display is paired. If you lose True Tone after a replacement, your MacBook is still fully functional. Most folk don’t notice the difference in daily use.

Why MacBook Screen Replacements Cost More Than Regular Laptops

Most Windows laptops have a screen panel you can remove and replace independently. Unscrew the bezel, disconnect the cable, swap the panel. MacBooks don’t work like that.

Apple builds the display, glass, housing, hinges, webcam, antenna cables, and display controller into a single integrated assembly. When your screen cracks, the entire lid assembly gets replaced because the LCD is bonded to the glass as a single unit. You can’t just swap the panel behind the glass.

The display panels Apple uses are also high-specification. Retina resolution, P3 wide colour gamut, 500 nits brightness on most models, and mini-LED backlighting with ProMotion on the newer 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros. Replacement parts that match these specifications cost more than a standard 1080p laptop panel.

This is why MacBook screen replacements cost more. You’re replacing a precision-engineered assembly, not just a panel. The quality is higher, the colour accuracy is tighter, and the result is a display that works exactly like the original. Still significantly less than a new MacBook, and significantly less than what Apple charges for an out-of-warranty replacement. For non-Apple laptop screen repairs, see our general screen repair page.

Our MacBook Screen Replacement Process

Quality macbook replacement screen parts at repair alliance dundee
Quality replacement displays ready for fitting at our workshop.

Diagnosis and quote. We check the obvious damage and look for anything else that might cause problems later. We test display connections, check for internal damage, and make sure the logic board is healthy. If you’ve also got keyboard issues or a dying battery, it makes sense to sort everything in one go. You get a clear quote covering parts and labour before we start.

Screen sourcing. We source quality replacement displays that match Apple’s original specifications. Same resolution, same colour accuracy, same build quality. For common models (MacBook Air 13″, MacBook Pro 13″ and 16″), we can usually get replacement screens delivered next day. Less common models may take a couple of days longer.

Professional installation. MacBooks need proper Apple-specific tools and careful handling. Our technicians have years of experience with the specific procedures for each MacBook model. No forcing things, no cutting corners. The Touch Bar models (2016-2019) need extra care since the Touch Bar is integrated into the display assembly. Apple Silicon models with the notch display (2021 onwards) have their own set of considerations around the camera and sensor housing.

Testing and calibration. Every replacement gets a full quality check. Display at different brightness levels, colour accuracy, webcam function, True Tone recalibration where applicable, and hinge tension. We open and close the lid multiple times to make sure the hinge feels right and the display cable seats properly at every angle. Only once we’re completely satisfied does your MacBook get the all-clear. Every screen replacement comes with a warranty.

MacBook Models We Service

MacBook Air (2018 onwards). All Retina models through to the latest M3 MacBook Air. The most common MacBook we see, especially from students. The 2018-2020 Intel models and the 2020 M1 model share a similar display assembly. The 2022 M2 and 2024 M3 Air models moved to a slightly larger 13.6″ display with a notch for the camera. Parts availability is excellent for all Air models.

MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ (M1 Pro/Max onwards). These have the Liquid Retina XDR displays with mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate. Stunning screens when they’re working, and the replacement parts need to match that spec. The display assemblies for these models are more expensive due to the mini-LED backlight array, but the result after replacement is indistinguishable from factory.

MacBook Pro 13″ (2016-2022). The 13″ Pro went through several iterations. The 2016-2019 Touch Bar models are regular visitors because of the flexgate cable issue. The 2020-2022 models (Intel and M1/M2) are more reliable but screens still crack from drops. These are the most affordable MacBook Pro screen replacements because parts are widely available.

Older Intel MacBooks (2012-2020). Still in daily use by plenty of folk. Parts availability can be trickier for the oldest models, but we’ll check before committing. About 80% of the MacBook screen replacements we do are for 2018-onwards models, but we regularly service older machines too. If you’ve got a 2012-2015 Retina MacBook Pro that’s still going strong apart from the screen, it’s usually worth fixing.

For keyboard, battery, trackpad, or charging port issues alongside screen damage, we handle those too. Sorting multiple repairs at once saves you time and often saves money compared to separate visits.

Need your MacBook screen sorted? Faster and cheaper than the Apple Store. Gee’z a shout.

MacBook Screen Replacement Questions

How long does MacBook screen replacement take?

If we have the screen in stock or can get it next day, your MacBook is usually back within two to three days. Less common models may take a bit longer for parts sourcing. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when we diagnose it.

Is it cheaper than the Apple Store?

Aye, significantly. Apple’s out-of-warranty screen repairs are expensive because you’re paying for the Apple badge on top of the parts and labour. We use the same quality replacement displays and follow the same repair standards, just without the premium markup.

Will I lose my data during screen replacement?

No. Screen replacement doesn’t touch your hard drive, SSD, or any of your files. Everything stays exactly where it was. You get the same MacBook back with all your programs, documents, and settings in place.

Will I lose True Tone after screen replacement?

On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and later), True Tone requires calibration between the display and logic board. We use Apple’s Repair Assistant tool to recalibrate True Tone after fitting a compatible replacement display. On older Intel MacBooks, True Tone isn’t affected by screen replacement.

What is Staingate and can you fix it?

Staingate is the anti-reflective coating on your MacBook screen delaminating and creating permanent-looking smudges that won’t wipe clean. It’s a known Apple issue, not dirt. We can remove the damaged coating (cheaper option) or replace the entire screen assembly. Most folk are happy with the coating removal.

Which MacBook models can you repair?

All of them. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from 2018 onwards are the most common. We also handle older Intel models going back to 2012, though parts availability can be trickier for very old machines. About 80% of our MacBook screen work is on 2018-onwards models.

Do you use genuine Apple screens?

We use quality replacement displays that match Apple’s original specifications for resolution, colour accuracy, and build quality. The result looks and performs exactly like the original. We’re upfront about exactly what parts we use.

Can you fix a MacBook with a black screen?

Aye. A black screen could be the LCD panel, a faulty backlight, or a loose display cable. We diagnose which one it is before quoting, because a cable fix costs far less than a full panel replacement. Don’t assume the worst until we’ve tested it.

Why do MacBook screens cost more to replace than regular laptops?

Apple builds the display, glass, webcam, antenna cables, and housing into a single integrated assembly. When the screen cracks, the entire lid assembly gets replaced because the LCD is bonded to the glass. You’re replacing a precision-engineered unit, not just swapping a panel.

Do your MacBook screen replacements come with a warranty?

Every screen replacement comes with a warranty on parts and labour. If something’s not right after the repair, bring it back and we’ll sort it.
