Need a phone holder for your car, your desk, or your bedside table? We stock a range of mounts and stands at our Perth Road shop. Walk in, try one with your actual phone, and walk out with it. No waiting for delivery, no guessing whether it fits.
Car phone holders are the ones folk ask about most. Using your phone for navigation while driving is legal in the UK as long as you’re not holding it. A proper mount keeps your phone in view, hands-free, and on the right side of the law. We’ll help you pick the right type for your car and your phone.
We also stock desk stands for video calls and working from home, and bedside holders for overnight charging. Compatible with iPhones, Samsung, Google Pixel, and most other phones.
Car Phone Holders
Not all car mounts are the same. The right one depends on your car’s dashboard layout, your phone size, and how you use your phone while driving. Here are the main types we stock:
Air vent mounts. Clip onto your car’s air vent slats. Compact, keeps the phone at eye level, and easy to install. The most popular type we sell. The downside is they can block airflow from that vent, and not all vent designs are compatible. Horizontal slat vents work best. Round vents need a specific clip type. Bring your phone in and we’ll check compatibility before you buy.
Gravity mounts. A clever design where the arms grip your phone automatically when you place it in the cradle. The weight of the phone pulls the side arms together. Lift the phone out and the arms spring open. No buttons, no clamping. Quick to dock and undock. These usually clip to the air vent and work well with most phone sizes.
Suction cup mounts. Stick to your windscreen or dashboard with a suction pad. More flexible positioning than vent mounts because you can place them wherever you want. Good for cars where the vents aren’t in a convenient position. The suction pad can lose grip in very hot weather though, and the phone can end up flying off the windscreen if the pad fails. Quality of the suction cup matters.
Dashboard adhesive mounts. Use a 3M adhesive pad to stick permanently to your dashboard. Very stable, won’t fall off in heat like suction cups can. The trade-off is they leave adhesive residue when you remove them, so think about placement before sticking it down.
Magnetic mounts. The mount is a magnetic disc that sticks to your dashboard or vent. Your phone clips on via a MagSafe ring (iPhones) or a metal plate stuck to the back of your phone or inside your case. The fastest way to dock and undock your phone. One-handed, takes a second. Just be aware that strong magnets near your phone’s camera can affect the optical image stabilisation on some models.
A decent car mount also stops your phone sliding around and getting damaged. We see plenty of cracked screens from phones that flew off the passenger seat when the driver braked hard.
UK Law: Using Your Phone While Driving
Quick summary of UK mobile phone driving law as it stands:
It’s illegal to hold your phone while driving. Touching, swiping, typing, or holding your phone in your hand while driving, stopped at traffic lights, or queuing in traffic. The penalty is £200 and 6 points on your licence. For new drivers (within two years of passing), 6 points means losing your licence entirely.
Using a phone in a cradle is legal. If your phone is secured in a mount and you’re using it hands-free for navigation, that’s legal. The mount must not obstruct your view of the road. Windscreen mounts need to be positioned carefully so they don’t block your line of sight.
Touching the screen while it’s in a cradle is a grey area. Technically, tapping your phone while it’s mounted isn’t “holding” it, so it doesn’t fall under the specific mobile phone offence. But if the police judge that you’re distracted, they can charge you with driving without due care and attention, which carries the same £200 fine and potentially more points.
The safest approach: set your navigation before you start driving, mount your phone where you can see it without looking away from the road, and don’t touch it until you’ve stopped. A good car mount makes this easy because the phone is always visible and you don’t need to fiddle with it.
Wireless Charging Mounts
Some of our car mounts include built-in wireless charging. Place your phone in the mount and it charges automatically. No fumbling with cables while driving.
Two standards to know about:
MagSafe (iPhone 12 onwards). Apple’s magnetic wireless charging standard. Charges at up to 15W. MagSafe car mounts use magnets to hold the phone in place and charge it simultaneously. The magnets align the phone perfectly for the best charging speed. If you have a MagSafe-compatible iPhone, these are the best option because the magnetic grip is secure and the charging alignment is spot on every time.
Qi wireless charging. The universal standard that works with most phones (iPhone 8 onwards, most Samsung Galaxy phones, Google Pixel). Charges at 7.5W to 10W depending on the phone. Slightly slower than MagSafe but works with a wider range of devices. Qi mounts usually use a clamp or gravity grip to hold the phone in position.
One thing to be aware of: wireless charging generates heat, and a phone sitting in direct sunlight on your dashboard while wirelessly charging can get quite warm. If the phone overheats, it’ll throttle the charging speed to protect the battery. Not a problem in Dundee’s weather most of the year, but worth knowing for summer drives.
Wireless charging through a thick phone case can be slower or may not work at all. Thin cases and MagSafe-compatible cases work fine. If your case is particularly bulky, a cable might be more reliable.
Choosing the Right Mount for Your Car
The “best” car mount depends entirely on your car and how you drive. Here’s how to pick:
Check your vents. If your car has horizontal slat vents in a convenient position, an air vent mount or gravity mount is usually the best option. Compact, stable, and at eye level. If your vents are circular, recessed, or in an awkward position, a suction cup or adhesive mount will work better.
Think about where you look. The best position for a car mount is where you can see the screen with minimal eye movement from the road. Near the top of the dashboard or just below the windscreen line is ideal. Avoid mounting it too low or off to the side where you’d have to look away from the road to check it.
Consider your phone size. Larger phones (iPhone Pro Max, Samsung Ultra) are heavier and need a sturdier mount. A cheap vent mount that holds an iPhone SE fine might sag or fall off with a heavier phone. If you’ve got a big phone, go for a gravity mount or suction mount with a strong grip.
Do you use a case? Magnetic mounts need a MagSafe case or a metal plate in your case. Clamp and gravity mounts work with any case. If you change cases often, a non-magnetic mount is simpler.
Not sure which suits your car? Walk in with your phone and we’ll help you pick. We can check which mount type fits your vent design and which size works with your phone and case.
Desk and Bedside Stands
Working from home and propping your phone against a mug for video calls? A proper phone stand holds your phone at the right angle for calls, watching videos, or just keeping notifications visible while you work.
We stock adjustable desk stands that work with any phone size. Some fold flat so you can carry them in a bag. Some have built-in charging pads so your phone charges while it sits in the stand.
For video calls, the angle matters. A stand that holds your phone at eye level (or close to it) looks much better on camera than a phone propped at a weird angle on a stack of books. Your colleagues and clients will notice the difference even if they can’t quite put their finger on why you look more professional on calls.
Bedside stands keep your phone upright for your alarm clock display and make it easy to grab in the morning. Better than leaving it face down on the bedside table where it gets scratched. Some bedside stands have a MagSafe or Qi charging pad built in, so your phone charges overnight without any cables to fumble with in the dark.
Why Buy In-Store
You can buy phone holders online, aye. But you’ll wait a day or two for delivery, and when it arrives, it might not fit your phone or your car properly. Then you’re sending it back and waiting again.
Walk into our Perth Road shop and you can try it with your actual phone before you buy it. Does the clamp fit? Does the angle work? Is it the right size? Will the vent clip work on your car’s vents? You’ll know before you leave.
We can also check whether a wireless charging mount is compatible with your phone and case. Not all phones support wireless charging, and some cases block it. Better to find out in the shop than after you’ve bought it.
No delivery charges, no waiting, no returns hassle. Just walk in and walk out with the right holder for your phone. 153 Perth Road, Monday to Friday 9:30 to 17:30, Saturday 10 to 17.
