Mobile Phone Unlock Service Dundee
Phone locked to a network? We offer IMEI-based phone unlocking at our Perth Road shop. Most unlocks done within a few hours to a couple of days.
Got a phone that only works on one network? Maybe you’ve bought a second-hand phone and it’s locked to the previous owner’s network. Maybe you’re switching from EE to Vodafone and your phone won’t accept the new SIM. Or maybe you’re heading abroad and want to use a local SIM card.
In the UK, most phones sold in the last few years are already unlocked. Ofcom pushed the networks to stop locking phones to their network, and most of them listened. But there are still plenty of locked phones out there, especially older handsets, phones bought on contract before the rules changed, and second-hand phones.
We offer IMEI-based phone unlocking at our Perth Road shop. You bring the phone in, we check whether it’s locked and to which network, submit the IMEI for unlocking, and once the unlock comes through, your phone works on any network.
Most unlocks are done within a few hours. Some take a couple of days depending on the network and the model. We’ll tell you the timeframe when you bring it in.
It’s a straightforward service. No software hacking, no jailbreaking, no dodgy workarounds. Just a legitimate IMEI unlock that removes the network restriction permanently.
Walk-ins welcome, nae appointment needed. We also handle screen repairs, battery replacements, and all other iPhone and Android repairs. Bring your phone to 153 Perth Road and we’ll check it for you.
Is Your Phone Actually Locked?
Before you pay for an unlock, it’s worth checking whether your phone is actually locked. A lot of folk assume their phone is locked when it’s not.
The easiest way to check: pop a SIM card from a different network into your phone. If it connects and you can make calls, your phone is already unlocked. If you get a message saying “SIM Not Supported”, “Invalid SIM”, or the phone asks for an unlock code, then it’s locked.
On iPhone, you can also check in Settings > General > About. Look for “Carrier Lock” or “Network Provider Lock”. If it says “No SIM restrictions” or “No Lock”, your phone is already unlocked.
On Android, the process varies by manufacturer, but trying a different network’s SIM card is the most reliable test.
Since Ofcom’s rules came in, most phones sold by UK networks from around 2021 onwards are sold unlocked. EE, Three, Vodafone and O2 all stopped locking phones to their network. But if your phone is older than that, was bought on a contract before the change, or was bought second-hand, it might still be locked.
If you’re not sure, just bring it in. We can check in a few seconds and tell you whether it needs unlocking or not. No charge for checking.
How Phone Unlocking Works
We use IMEI-based unlocking. Every phone has a unique IMEI number (a 15-digit code that identifies your specific handset). You can find yours by dialling *#06# on your phone, or checking Settings > General > About on iPhone.
When you bring your phone in, we note the IMEI and the network it’s locked to. We submit the IMEI to an unlocking service that works directly with the network databases. The network removes the lock from your IMEI, and your phone is permanently unlocked.
For most phones, the unlock comes through within a few hours. Some networks and some models take a bit longer, up to a couple of days. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when you drop it off.
Once the unlock is processed, we pop in a SIM card from a different network to confirm it’s working. On some phones you might need to connect to WiFi and complete a short activation step. We handle all of that for you.
The unlock is permanent. It doesn’t expire, it doesn’t revert after a software update, and it doesn’t affect your warranty or your data. Your phone just works on any network from that point on.
This isn’t jailbreaking, rooting, or any kind of software hack. It’s the same process the networks use themselves when a customer asks them to unlock a phone. We just handle it for you without the wait times and the runaround of calling your network’s customer service.
What We Don’t Do
It’s important to be clear about what phone unlocking is and isn’t. We get folk walking in expecting services we don’t offer, so here’s what falls outside IMEI network unlocking:
iCloud Activation Lock. If you’ve bought a second-hand iPhone and it’s asking for someone else’s Apple ID and password, that’s an iCloud Activation Lock, not a network lock. We can’t remove it. Only the original Apple ID owner can. If you’ve bought a phone with an Activation Lock, contact the seller and ask them to remove it from their Apple account.
Forgotten passcodes. If you’ve forgotten your screen passcode and can’t get into your phone, that’s not a network lock. Apple and Google both have recovery processes for this, but they typically involve wiping the phone. We can help with software issues including restores, but we can’t bypass a passcode without erasing the phone.
Stolen or blacklisted phones. If a phone has been reported stolen or lost, the IMEI gets blacklisted. We won’t attempt to unlock blacklisted phones. We check the IMEI status before processing any unlock request.
Why Your Phone Might Be Locked
Phone locking used to be standard practice in the UK. When you bought a phone on contract, the network locked it to their system so you couldn’t switch to a competitor mid-contract. Even pay-as-you-go phones were often locked.
Ofcom changed the rules in December 2021, banning UK networks from selling locked phones. Since then, most new phones are sold unlocked. But there are still millions of locked phones in circulation:
- Phones bought on contract before December 2021
- Second-hand phones that were originally sold locked
- Phones imported from other countries where locking is still common
- Older phones that have been sitting in a drawer for years and are now being passed on or sold
- Some refurbished phones sold through third-party retailers
If you’ve recently bought a second-hand phone and it won’t accept your SIM, there’s a good chance it’s still locked to the previous owner’s network. That’s the most common reason folk come to us for unlocking.
Free from Your Network?
If your contract has ended and you’ve paid off the phone, your network is legally required to unlock it for free under Ofcom rules. You can contact your network’s customer service and request an unlock.
The catch is that the process can take up to 30 days, requires navigating customer service phone menus, and some networks make it more difficult than it should be. We do the same thing faster, usually within a few hours to a couple of days, without the hassle of calling your network.
If you’re happy waiting and don’t mind the phone calls, try your network first. If you want it done quickly without the runaround, bring it to us.
Which Phones Can We Unlock?
We can unlock most phones from UK networks. iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel, Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and more.
The main UK networks we unlock from:
- EE (including Orange and T-Mobile)
- Vodafone
- O2
- Three
- Sky Mobile
- Tesco Mobile
- Virgin Media
- BT Mobile
- Giffgaff (uses O2’s network, phones are usually unlocked but older ones might not be)
Some unlocks are more straightforward than others. Most mainstream models from the big networks unlock quickly. Less common networks or very old models can sometimes take longer or may not be possible in rare cases.
We’ll check your phone when you bring it in and tell you straight away whether we can unlock it, how long it’ll take, and what it’ll cost. If we can’t do it, we won’t charge you for checking.
Phones locked to networks outside the UK (international locks) are sometimes possible but depend on the specific network and country. Bring it in and we’ll have a look.
How Long Does Unlocking Take?
Most phone unlocks are done within a few hours. You can drop your phone off in the morning and collect it later the same day in many cases.
Some unlocks take a couple of days. This depends on the network, the phone model, and how quickly the unlock database processes the request. We have no control over the processing time once the IMEI is submitted, but we’ll give you an honest estimate when you bring it in.
We’ll gee’z a shout as soon as the unlock comes through. You don’t need to keep checking in. We’ll let you know and you can pick it up when it’s ready.
If you need your phone unlocked urgently (heading abroad tomorrow, for example), tell us when you drop it off and we’ll flag it. Some unlocks can be expedited but it depends on the network.
Why Unlock Your Phone?
There are a few good reasons to get your phone unlocked:
Switching networks
Found a better deal with another provider? An unlocked phone lets you switch by just swapping your SIM card. No need to buy a new phone.
Travelling abroad
Roaming charges can be steep. With an unlocked phone, you can buy a local SIM card when you arrive and pay local rates for calls, texts and data. Much cheaper than roaming on your UK network.
Selling your phone
An unlocked phone is worth more than a locked one. Buyers want the flexibility to use it on any network. If you’re selling or trading in your old phone, unlocking it first will get you a better price.
Using dual SIM
Some phones support two SIM cards. If your phone is locked, the second SIM slot won’t work with a different network. Unlocking opens up both slots.
Passing it on
Giving your old phone to a family member who’s on a different network? Unlock it first so they can use their own SIM without any hassle.
Phone Unlock Service Questions
How do I know if my phone is locked?
Put a SIM card from a different network into your phone. If it connects and makes calls, it’s already unlocked. If you get “SIM Not Supported” or “Invalid SIM”, it’s locked. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About and look for “Carrier Lock”. Not sure? Bring it in and we’ll check for free.
How long does phone unlocking take?
Most unlocks are done within a few hours. Some networks and models take a couple of days depending on how quickly the unlock database processes the request. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when you bring it in and let you know as soon as it’s done.
Is phone unlocking permanent?
Aye. Once unlocked via IMEI, it stays unlocked permanently. It doesn’t revert after software updates, factory resets, or SIM changes. Your phone works on any network from that point on.
Can I get my phone unlocked for free from my network?
If your contract has ended and the phone is paid off, your network is legally required to unlock it for free under Ofcom rules. The process can take up to 30 days through your network’s customer service. We do it faster if you don’t want the wait.
Can you remove iCloud Activation Lock?
No. iCloud Activation Lock is tied to the original owner’s Apple ID and can only be removed by them. If you’ve bought a second-hand iPhone with an Activation Lock, contact the seller and ask them to remove it from their Apple account. This is a completely different issue from network unlocking.
Can you unlock a phone I’ve forgotten the passcode for?
Forgotten passcodes are a different issue from network locks. We can help with software restores, but bypassing a passcode typically requires erasing the phone. Apple and Google both have recovery processes for this.
Which networks can you unlock from?
All major UK networks: EE (including Orange and T-Mobile), Vodafone, O2, Three, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media, BT Mobile, and Giffgaff. International network unlocks are sometimes possible depending on the country and network.
Which phone brands can you unlock?
iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel, Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and more. Most mainstream phones from UK networks unlock quickly. Very old or unusual models may take longer.
Will unlocking affect my data or warranty?
No. IMEI unlocking doesn’t touch your data, apps, or settings. It doesn’t affect your warranty either. It’s the same process networks use themselves. Nothing is installed or changed on your phone.
Do I need to book an appointment?
Nope. Just drap your phone in during opening hours: Monday to Friday 9:30 to 17:30, Saturday 10:00 to 17:00. 153 Perth Road, Dundee. We can check if your phone is locked for free in seconds.
Phone Locked? Gee’z a Shout.
Walk-ins welcome. Bring your phone and we’ll check if it can be unlocked.
