Common Console Problems We Fix

Gaming consoles take a beating. They run hot for hours at a time, get shoved into cramped TV cabinets with no airflow, collect dust like nobody’s business, and take the odd knock when the controller goes flying after a dodgy FIFA goal. They’re built to handle a lot, but eventually something gives.

The most common fault we see across all consoles is overheating. When the internal fans clog up with dust and the thermal paste between the processor and heatsink dries out, the console starts throttling performance to protect itself. You’ll notice longer load times, frame drops, random freezes, and eventually the console will shut itself down mid-game. Left long enough, the heat can permanently damage the GPU or CPU, turning a simple clean into a much bigger repair.

Disc drive problems come in a close second. Consoles that won’t read discs, make grinding or clicking noises when you insert a game, or eject discs on their own. Sometimes the laser lens is dirty or worn out. Sometimes the drive motor has failed. And on the PS5, Sony paired the disc drive to the motherboard at the factory, so replacing it isn’t as straightforward as swapping in a new unit.

HDMI port failures are another regular one. The HDMI port on a console is soldered directly to the motherboard with tiny pins. If the cable gets yanked, the console gets knocked over, or someone trips over the lead, those pins bend or snap. The result is no picture, a flickering display, or a signal that drops in and out. This is a micro-soldering job that needs proper equipment and a steady hand.

Controller drift is probably the most frustrating fault going. Your character walks on its own, the camera spins without you touching anything, or your aim drifts in shooters. It happens on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch controllers alike. The analogue stick mechanism wears down with use, and eventually the sensor loses its centre point. We can replace the stick module and get it tracking properly again.

Power issues round out the top five. A console that won’t turn on at all, beeps once then dies, or turns on briefly then shuts straight back down. Could be a blown fuse on the power supply board, a faulty power button ribbon, a short circuit on the motherboard, or capacitors that have given up. We diagnose before we quote so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

We also see faulty WiFi and Bluetooth modules, broken USB ports, corrupted storage drives, sticky or unresponsive buttons, and cosmetic damage like cracked housings. Whatever is wrong with your console, bring it in and we’ll take a look.

PlayStation Repair

We repair every PlayStation model from the PS3 through to the PS5 and PS5 Slim. Sony has sold millions of these consoles and every generation has its own set of common faults that we’ve seen hundreds of times.

PS3 Repairs

The PS3 is getting on a bit now, but plenty of folk in Dundee still use them. The original fat PS3 is notorious for the Yellow Light of Death, which is usually caused by failed solder joints on the GPU from years of thermal cycling. The PS3 Slim is more reliable but still suffers from overheating when the thermal paste dries out and the fan starts sounding like a jet engine. We can strip the console down, clean out years of accumulated dust, replace the thermal paste with quality compound, and get it running quietly again. Blu-ray drive failures are common on all PS3 models too.

PS4 Repairs

The PS4 is still one of the most popular consoles we work on. The original PS4 and PS4 Slim both run into overheating problems as they age. That loud fan noise you hear during games is the console struggling to cool itself because the heatsink is caked in dust and the thermal paste has turned to chalk. A proper strip-down, clean, and thermal paste replacement makes a massive difference.

The PS4 Pro has additional thermal challenges because it pushes more power through a similar cooling system. We see a lot of these with shutdowns during graphically demanding games.

HDMI port repairs on the PS4 are one of our most requested jobs. The port is fragile and the pins bend easily. We desolder the damaged port and fit a new one using our micro-soldering station. Disc drive faults on the PS4 are usually down to a worn laser lens or a failed roller mechanism. We can replace either without needing to swap the whole drive unit.

PS5 Repairs

The PS5 brought new repair challenges. The disc drive is paired to the motherboard using encrypted firmware, which means you can’t just drop in a replacement drive from another PS5. We can repair the existing drive in most cases, replacing the laser assembly or the drive motor while keeping the original board that holds the pairing data.

PS5 overheating tends to show up as graphical artefacts, coloured dots on screen, or the console shutting down with a warning message. The liquid metal thermal interface Sony uses is better than standard paste, but it can migrate over time and lose coverage on the processor. We reapply it properly so the heat transfer is even across the whole chip.

The PS5 DualSense controller is brilliant when it works, but the adaptive triggers use small motors and gear mechanisms that can strip or break with heavy use. Stick drift on the DualSense is just as common as it was on the DualShock 4. We replace the trigger mechanisms and analogue modules to get your controller back to full working order.

Xbox Repair

We fix all Xbox consoles from the Xbox 360 right through to the Xbox Series X and Series S. Microsoft’s consoles are generally well built, but they’re not immune to hardware problems, especially as they age.

Xbox 360 Repairs

The Xbox 360 earned itself a reputation early on with the Red Ring of Death, caused by failed solder joints from inadequate cooling. The later Slim and E models fixed most of that, but they still develop disc drive issues and power supply faults after years of use. If your 360 still has a library of games you want to play, it’s usually worth getting it fixed rather than replacing it.

Xbox One Repairs

The Xbox One, One S and One X all come through our workshop regularly. The original Xbox One has a large external power supply that can fail, leaving you with a console that clicks but won’t start. The One S and One X moved the power supply inside the console, which solved one problem but created thermal challenges in a smaller enclosure.

Disc drive failures on the Xbox One are straightforward to diagnose. If it makes a grinding noise, the drive motor bearings are usually shot. If it accepts the disc but won’t read it, the laser assembly needs replacing. HDMI ports on all Xbox One models are the same micro-soldering repair as the PlayStation. Tiny pins, easily bent, needs proper equipment to fix.

Xbox Series X and Series S Repairs

The Series X runs surprisingly cool for its power, thanks to the big fan and vertical airflow design. But it still needs cleaning out periodically, and the thermal paste does dry out over time. The Series S, being smaller and cheaper, has a tighter cooling system that can struggle in warm rooms or enclosed cabinets.

Xbox controllers across all generations suffer from stick drift. Microsoft uses the same type of analogue stick module as everyone else, and they wear out the same way. We swap the modules and calibrate them so they track dead centre again.

Nintendo Switch Repair

The Nintendo Switch is one of the most common consoles we repair, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s portable, it gets handed to wee ones, and Joy-Con drift is practically guaranteed after enough use.

Joy-Con Drift

Joy-Con drift is the single most common Switch repair we do. The analogue stick mechanism inside the Joy-Con uses a contact pad that wears down over time. Once it starts drifting, your character walks on its own, menus scroll without input, and games become unplayable. Nintendo faced a class action lawsuit over this because the fault is so widespread.

We replace the entire analogue stick module inside the Joy-Con. It takes about 30 minutes per controller. The new module tracks properly and feels exactly like it did when it was new. We can do one Joy-Con or both while you wait.

Switch Screen and Digitiser

The Switch screen is vulnerable because it’s a handheld device that gets carried around, dropped, sat on, and shoved into bags. Cracked screens, unresponsive touch areas, and dead pixels are all fixable with a full screen and digitiser replacement. The Switch OLED model has a better screen but it’s also more expensive to replace because of the larger OLED panel.

Charging and Battery

If your Switch won’t charge, the USB-C port is usually the culprit. The port takes a lot of wear from plugging in and pulling out the charging cable and dock connector. We desolder the old port and fit a new one. Battery replacements are straightforward on the Switch. If yours only lasts an hour when it used to last three or four, a new battery brings it back to full capacity.

Switch Lite, Switch OLED and Switch 2

The Switch Lite has the same Joy-Con drift problem but because the sticks are built into the console body, you can’t just detach them and send them off. The repair involves opening the console and replacing the stick modules inside. Same fix, just a bit more involved.

The Switch OLED model shares most of the same repair needs as the standard Switch, but the screen and dock are different. The OLED panel is gorgeous but costs more to replace. The improved kickstand and LAN port in the dock mean fewer of those specific faults, but the Joy-Cons are identical and drift just the same.

How We Repair Consoles

Walk in with your console and tell us what’s going on. We’ll ask a few questions about the symptoms, when it started, and what you’ve tried already. No judgement if you’ve had a go at fixing it yourself and made it worse. We’ve seen it all.

We charge a small diagnostic fee to strip the console down and find the fault properly. If you go ahead with the repair, that fee comes off the final price. If you decide not to go ahead, you just pay the diagnostic fee and pick your console back up. Fair and straightforward.

For thermal work like overheating repairs, we do a full strip-down. Every component comes out. We clean the heatsink, fan, and all internal surfaces to remove dust buildup. Old thermal paste or thermal pads get removed completely, and we apply fresh quality compound. The console goes back together and we run it under load to check the temperatures are where they should be.

HDMI port repairs are done at our micro-soldering station. We remove the damaged port under magnification, clean and prepare the pads on the motherboard, and solder a brand new port in place. Then we test with multiple cables and displays to make sure the signal is solid and all the pins are connected properly.

For disc drive repairs, we test the laser, motor, and eject mechanism separately to isolate exactly what has failed. We replace only what needs replacing rather than swapping the entire drive unit, which keeps the cost down and avoids firmware pairing issues on consoles like the PS5.

Every repair comes with a 90-day warranty. If the same fault comes back within that period, we’ll fix it again at no extra cost.

Console Repair vs Buying New

This is the question we get asked most, and we’ll always give you an honest answer. If your console is worth repairing, we’ll tell you. If it’s not, we’ll tell you that too.

Most console repairs cost a fraction of what a new console would set you back. A thermal clean and repaste on a PS4 or Xbox One costs far less than buying a replacement, and it can give the console another few years of life. An HDMI port repair is a fraction of the price of a new PS5 or Series X. Controller drift fixes cost a few quid compared to buying brand new controllers at full retail.

The maths usually makes sense for any console from the current or previous generation. PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch. These consoles still play current games, they still get updates, and their game libraries are massive. Spending a bit on a repair is almost always cheaper than starting fresh.

Where it gets borderline is with older consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360. If the repair is simple, like a thermal clean or a disc drive fix, it’s usually still worth it because the parts are cheap and the labour is minimal. But if the motherboard has a major fault, the repair cost might approach what you’d pay for a used replacement console in working order. We’ll lay out the numbers and let you decide.

There’s an environmental angle too. Electronic waste is a growing problem, and consoles contain metals, plastics and rare earth elements that take enormous energy to mine and process. Fixing what you’ve got instead of binning it and buying new is better for the planet. One less console in landfill makes a difference.

And here’s something folk forget: buying a new console doesn’t just mean the console itself. You might need new controllers, a new headset if yours uses a proprietary connection, and you’ll spend hours redownloading your game library and setting everything back up. A repair keeps everything exactly as it was. Your game saves, your settings, your profile, your downloaded games. All still there.

Game Data and Saves

Your game saves are safe during a repair. We don’t format drives, we don’t reset consoles, and we don’t delete profiles. When you pick your console up after a repair, everything will be exactly where you left it. Your game progress, your downloaded titles, your user settings, your friends list. All untouched.

The only time data might be at risk is if the console’s internal storage drive has failed. If the hard drive or SSD has died completely, the data on it may not be recoverable. But that’s the fault itself, not anything that happens during the repair. We’ll tell you upfront if there’s any risk to your data before we start work.

If you’re worried about your saves before bringing your console in, the safest thing to do is back them up. On PlayStation, if you have PS Plus, your saves sync to the cloud automatically. On Xbox, saves sync to your Microsoft account by default as long as the console has been online. On Switch, Nintendo Switch Online backs up saves for most games, though a few titles like Animal Crossing don’t support cloud saves.

You can also back up to a USB drive on PlayStation and Xbox. Plug in a USB stick, go to settings, and copy your save data across. Takes five minutes and gives you peace of mind.

If your console won’t turn on at all and you can’t back up beforehand, don’t worry. In most cases the storage drive is fine and the fault is elsewhere. Power issues, HDMI problems, overheating shutdowns. None of these affect your stored data. We’ll get the console working again and your saves will be right where you left them.

// FAQ

Common Questions

How much does a gaming console repair cost?

It depends on the console and the fault. A thermal clean and repaste is at the lower end, while HDMI port micro-soldering and disc drive repairs cost more because of the specialist work involved. We charge a small diagnostic fee to find the fault, and if you go ahead with the repair, that fee comes off the final price. Bring it in and we’ll quote you on the spot.

How long does a console repair take?

Simple jobs like controller drift fixes and thermal cleans are usually done the same day. HDMI port repairs and disc drive work typically take one to two days depending on parts availability. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when you drop it off so you’re not left guessing.

Will I lose my game saves during a repair?

No. We don’t format drives, reset consoles, or delete profiles. Your game saves, downloaded games, settings and friends list will all be exactly where you left them when you pick the console back up.

Can you fix a PS5 disc drive?

Aye. The PS5 disc drive is paired to the motherboard, so you can’t just swap in a new one. We repair the existing drive by replacing the laser assembly or motor while keeping the original board that holds the pairing data. This lets us fix the fault without breaking the firmware link.

Can you fix controller drift?

Aye, on all controllers. PlayStation DualShock and DualSense, Xbox controllers, and Nintendo Joy-Cons. We replace the analogue stick module with a new unit so it tracks dead centre again. Joy-Con drift fixes take about 30 minutes per controller.

Is it worth repairing an older console like a PS3 or Xbox 360?

Usually, aye. Simple repairs like thermal cleans, disc drive fixes and power supply replacements are cheap enough that it makes sense. If the motherboard has a major fault and the repair cost approaches the price of a used replacement, we’ll tell you straight and let you decide.

Can you fix a broken HDMI port on my console?

Aye. HDMI port repair is one of our most common console jobs. We desolder the damaged port at our micro-soldering station, clean the pads, and fit a brand new port. Then we test with multiple cables and displays to make sure the signal is solid. Works for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Switch dock.

My console won’t turn on at all. Can you fix it?

Bring it in and we’ll diagnose the fault. Could be a blown fuse, a faulty power supply, a short circuit on the motherboard, or a failed capacitor. We’ll find the cause, quote you for the fix, and you can decide whether to go ahead. Your data is almost always fine in these situations because the storage drive is unaffected.
