Popped in with my broken phone, the team explained what I had broken and what would need to be replaced. Explained the use of genuine parts, correct model and colour matching. Parts took a day longer to arrive, but there was a storm so yknow, these things happen, popped in when parts arrived with phone, an hour later it was ready for collection. Looks better than new! Excellent, good quality and friendly service, highly recommended!

Compatible Ink Cartridges

Our compatible printer ink cartridges deliver comparable quality prints to those you’d expect from original cartridges, with one major difference: the price. We stock cartridges for most common Epson, Canon, and HP printer models sold in the last decade, and our prices start from under £5.

You might expect the quality to be inferior, but printer manufacturers often rely on inflated inkjet cartridge prices to make up the cost of cheap printers. The difference in print quality compared to originals is often negligible, but the savings can be substantial. Most of our customers save 70% or more compared to the cost of originals.

A selection of compatible inkjet cartridges at our Perth Road shop

“Dinnae pay through the nose for original carts when the compatible ones print just as well. Gee’z a shout if you’re nae sure which one fits your printer.”

There are a confusing mess of cartridge types out there that most people don’t need to understand. If you’re not sure what the exact cartridge is for your specific printer model, ask our staff. Whether you’re running an ancient Canon Pixma or the latest HP OfficeJet, we likely have what you need in stock.

Brands We Stock

We keep a wide range of compatible cartridges on the shelf, organised by brand and model number so we can find what you need quickly. Here’s what we typically carry.

Epson Cartridges

Epson printers are popular for home and small office use, and the compatible cartridges we stock cover most of the common models. Whether you’ve got an Expression Home, WorkForce, or EcoTank printer, we can usually match the right cartridge. Epson uses a numbered system (like T1631, T2711, T0711) that can be confusing, but our staff know their way around the numbering and can look up your model to find the correct fit.

Canon Cartridges

Canon Pixma printers are another common brand we see, particularly the older models that are still going strong. Canon uses PGI and CLI numbered cartridges for most inkjet models. The PGI cartridges contain pigment black ink for text printing, while CLI cartridges handle colour and photo printing. We stock compatible versions of both types for the most popular Canon printer models.

HP Cartridges

HP printers are everywhere, from home desktops to office workhorses. HP’s cartridge numbering (like HP 305, HP 302, HP 950/951) is slightly more straightforward than some brands, but there are still plenty of variations. We stock compatibles for the most commonly used HP cartridge numbers. If you’ve got an HP DeskJet, OfficeJet, or Envy printer, there’s a good chance we’ve got what you need.

Brother Cartridges

Brother printers are popular in offices because they’re reliable and the running costs are lower than most competitors. Brother uses LC-numbered cartridges (like LC3211, LC3213, LC1240) for their inkjet models. Their INKvestment tank cartridges hold more ink than standard cartridges, which means fewer replacements. We stock compatible Brother cartridges for the most common DCP, MFC, and HL models.

Why Choose Compatible Cartridges

The savings are the obvious reason, but there’s more to it than just price. Compatible cartridges make sense for most people who print regularly.

Cost savings of 70% or more. Original brand cartridges are expensive because printer manufacturers subsidise the cost of the printer itself and make their money back on ink. A set of original cartridges can cost more than the printer did. Compatible cartridges break that cycle by offering the same capacity at a fraction of the price.

Print quality that’s good enough for most uses. For everyday documents, invoices, letters and general printing, you won’t notice a meaningful difference. If you’re printing professional photographs for framing, original cartridges might have a slight edge. For everything else, compatible cartridges do the job well.

Better for the environment. The environmental impact of ink cartridge waste concerns many of our customers, particularly local businesses printing hundreds of pages monthly. Compatible cartridges help reduce this waste by extending the useful life of existing printer hardware rather than forcing upgrades. Something the printer manufacturers would often prefer you to do.

Your printer warranty isn’t affected. Using compatible cartridges doesn’t void your printer warranty. That’s a common myth. Consumer law protects your right to use third-party consumables. Manufacturers cannot void your warranty for using compatible cartridges unless they can prove the cartridge itself caused damage.

XL and high-yield cartridges. Most cartridge ranges come in standard and XL versions. XL cartridges hold more ink and print more pages. The cost per page is lower with XL even though the cartridge costs a bit more upfront. If you print regularly, XL compatibles give you the best value. We stock both standard and XL where available.

One thing to watch: firmware updates. Some printer manufacturers (HP in particular) push firmware updates that can block compatible cartridges. If your printer suddenly stops recognising a cartridge that was working fine, a firmware update might be the cause. You can usually turn off automatic firmware updates in your printer settings to prevent this. If you’re stuck after an update, bring the printer in and we can help.

Finding the Right Cartridge

We keep our inventory organised so that we can quickly look up and find what you need. There are a few ways to make sure you get the right cartridge first time.

Bring the old cartridge in. The simplest method. We can match the cartridge number printed on the side and get you the compatible equivalent straight away.

Know your printer model. The model number is usually printed on the front or top of your printer. Something like “Epson XP-4100” or “HP DeskJet 2720”. If you tell us that, we can look up the correct cartridge number.

Check the printer settings. Most printers show the cartridge type in their settings menu or when you open the ink levels display on your computer. Take a photo of the screen and show us.

Repair Alliance is owned and run by local people who have over two decades in the computer industry in Dundee, so we know what our customers need when it comes to inkjet cartridges. We also know how much our customers appreciate the savings switching to compatible cartridges has made for them. They don’t have to worry about the cost every time they print something.

And because we’re local, we’re there for you. Within walking distance of Dundee University, Abertay University, the city centre and the west end of Dundee. When you’ve run out of ink and you need a replacement, you don’t have to wait for a delivery or drive across town.

While you’re in for cartridges, we also stock computer accessories including cables, external drives, and more. If your printer itself needs attention (paper jams, connectivity issues, print quality problems), we can help with computer repairs too.

// FAQ

Printer Ink Cartridge Questions

Do you stock original brand cartridges?

We focus on compatible cartridges because they offer the best value for our customers. The print quality is comparable to originals for everyday use, and the savings are significant. If you specifically need an original branded cartridge, give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.

What printer brands do you cover?

We stock compatible cartridges for Epson, Canon and HP printers. These three brands cover the vast majority of home and office inkjet printers in Dundee. If you’ve got a different brand, gee’z a ring on 01382 217272 and we’ll let you know if we can help.

How much do ink cartridges cost?

Our compatible cartridges start from under £5 for individual colours. Multi-packs with all four colours are also available at a better per-cartridge price. That’s typically 70% less than what you’d pay for original branded cartridges.

Will compatible cartridges damage my printer?

Nae. Compatible cartridges are designed to work with your specific printer model and won’t cause any damage. Using compatible cartridges also doesn’t void your printer warranty. That’s protected by EU consumer law.

What if you don’t have my cartridge in stock?

If we dinnae have your specific cartridge on the shelf, we can usually order it in quickly. Let us know your printer model or cartridge number and we’ll get back to you with availability. Most orders arrive within a couple of days.

Can I recycle old cartridges?

Aye, you can bring your old cartridges to us and we’ll make sure they’re disposed of responsibly. It’s better than throwing them in the bin where they’ll end up in landfill. Every little bit helps.

How do I know which cartridge fits my printer?

The easiest way is to bring your old cartridge in and we’ll match it. Alternatively, tell us your printer model number (usually printed on the front of the printer) and we’ll look it up. You can also call ahead on 01382 217272 and we’ll check before you visit.

Where are you located in Dundee?

We’re at 153 Perth Rd, Dundee DD2 1AR. That’s just along from Dundee University, near the Sinderins. Easy to reach from the city centre, the west end and the university area. There’s usually parking available nearby too.
