The iPhone 7 (models A1660, A1778, A1779) was the iPhone that killed the headphone jack and made everybody talk about it. Released in September 2016, it introduced stereo speakers for the first time on an iPhone and brought IP67 water and dust resistance, a feature folk had been begging Apple for. The A10 Fusion chip was a powerhouse with its two high-performance and two efficiency cores, and the 12MP camera gained optical image stabilisation that was previously exclusive to the Plus models. The new Jet Black finish was a stunner, though it scratched if you looked at it wrong. This was also the first iPhone with a solid-state home button using the Taptic Engine rather than a physical click. We fix every component of the iPhone 7 at our Dundee repair centre on Perth Road.
The iPhone 7 is a sweet spot for repairability and capability. It still runs iOS 15, which means most modern apps work fine. At our DD2 1AR workshop, the most common repairs are cracked screens, battery replacements for cells that have degraded below 80% health, and the infamous audio IC fault. That last one is a big deal with the 7, a chip on the logic board responsible for audio can fail, causing the phone to lose sound during calls, get stuck on speaker mode, or show a greyed-out speaker icon.
