A Dell laptop came to us from Guardbridge on a Saturday afternoon at the end of August, and it wouldn’t start. It was failing to POST, which is the self-check a laptop runs every time you press the power button. It looks over the processor, the memory and the other key parts before it loads anything, and if that check can’t finish, the laptop goes no further.

By the Monday morning we had it stripped down and the motherboard out on the bench, and the trouble wasn’t hard to find. There was a scorch mark on the board, with black soot spread over the wee parts around it and right across the top of a chip. Something on that bit of the board had got hot enough to burn. Damage like that is more than enough to stop a laptop getting through its start-up checks.

The burn sat close to the processor, next to a row of four square grey coils. On a laptop board, a row of coils like that usually belongs to the circuit that feeds the processor its power, turning what comes in from the charger or the battery into the much lower voltage the processor needs. It’s one of the busiest corners of any laptop board. The processor itself is soldered straight on, as it is in most laptops now, so it isn’t a part you can just pull out and swap.

A burnt motherboard doesn’t always mean a new one, and this laptop didn’t need one. Under the microscope you could see how far the damage reached: a black crust of burnt material, with bare copper showing where the board’s thin coating had gone. Board-level repair like this usually means cleaning up the area, finding which parts are damaged, putting them right and checking the circuit for shorts before it goes anywhere near power again. Slow, careful work.

Our board-level technician had the board fixed by the Friday afternoon. The laptop was back together and ready to collect on the Monday morning, nine days after it was dropped off, and it went home that Thursday.

If your laptop won’t start, the simple checks come first: the charger, a hard reset with everything unplugged, and whether any lights come on at all. Lots of Dell laptops flash a pattern of amber and white lights when they can’t start, so it’s worth filming that on your phone to show us. If you can smell burning or feel a hot spot, though, unplug it and leave it be. Every go at switching it on sends more power into the fault. Drop it in and we’ll take a look.
