An iPhone 14 Plus came to us from Arbroath with the back glass in a right state. The booking came in by email, so before we'd laid eyes on the phone, all we had on the job was two words. Back cracked. We sent over a quote and booking link for a new back glass, and it was paid online within ten minutes.

That glass had to be ordered in, so we put the order through the same day. Once we had the phone in front of us, it was clear that "cracked" was being kind. The whole back had gone. Cracks ran right across the panel, and along the edges the glass had broken into wee bits that were flaking away. Side on, you could see splinters of glass along the edge where the back meets the frame.

A back like that is more than a looks problem. Loose bits of glass catch your fingers and end up in your pocket, and once the back is broken the phone isn't sealed against splashes the way it was when it was new.

Here's the good news with this model. On the iPhone 12 and 13, the back glass is bonded to the frame, which makes changing it slow, fiddly work. For the 14 and 14 Plus, Apple redesigned the inside so the back glass comes off as its own panel. It's still held in with adhesive, so it takes a bit of care, but it's a far more sensible repair than it used to be.

When the new glass arrived, the old panel came off, the new one went on, and the phone was ready on the Saturday afternoon, two days after that Thursday morning booking. The new back was smooth and glossy again, with the Apple logo sitting clean in the middle. On the bench it powered up to the Apple logo as it should, and it went through a device test after the repair. It was collected that same afternoon.

One more thing worth passing on. We also took a photo of the phone's Battery Health screen while it was with us. It read 78% maximum capacity, with Apple's own message that the battery's health is significantly degraded. Apple designs the batteries in these phones to keep up to 80% of their original capacity at 500 full charge cycles, so that's just under the mark. The battery wasn't part of this job, but if yours shows the same message, it's worth asking about a new one while the phone's in.

If the back of your iPhone 14 or 14 Plus has cracked, don't put up with it. It's a fixable job and you don't need a new phone. Drop it in and we'll take a look.
