A PS5 came in from a family out near Camperdown Park with the fault we see a few times a month. Picture was flickering on and off, then the screen went black entirely. The cable was fine (tested on another telly) but the HDMI port on the console itself had had enough.
This one is almost always the same story. The console gets moved around a lot. Down to the grandparents, over to a mate's house, back again. Every time the HDMI cable gets yanked out and plugged back in at whatever angle works. Over enough cycles the port loosens, the solder cracks, and the internal contacts give up.
The PS5's HDMI port is soldered straight onto the mainboard, so there is no easy plug-and-play swap. We stripped the console, pulled the mainboard, and hot-air-removed the old damaged port. Solder wick to clean up the pads, flux on, new port positioned square, and reflowed it cleanly onto the board. Rebuilt the console and it fired up first time with full 4K signal.
Quick prevention tip if your PS5 gets moved around a lot: plug the HDMI cable into the console once and leave it in. Move the whole console with the cable still attached and disconnect the TV end instead. Saves the port. If yours has already gone though, drap it in and we'll get you sorted.
