iPad screen cracked? It happens all the time. iPads get used by the whole family. Kids play games on them, they get propped up on the kitchen counter for recipes, they slide off couch arms onto hard floors. One drop and the screen’s covered in cracks.

The good news is a cracked iPad screen doesn’t mean you need a new iPad. iPads last for years. Apple supports them with software updates for 5-6 years after release. A 3-year-old iPad with a cracked screen still has plenty of life left in it. A screen repair gives it another few years of use for a fraction of what a new one costs.

At Repair Alliance on Perth Road, we repair screens on every iPad model. iPad, iPad Air, iPad Mini, iPad Pro. All generations, all sizes. We replace the full screen assembly and test everything with our diagnostic software before and after.

We run your iPad through our diagnostic software to test touch response, cameras, speakers, Face ID and battery health. Touch accuracy at hundreds of points across the display, front and rear camera function including autofocus and image stabilisation, speaker output levels, microphone sensitivity, Face ID module verification on Pro models, battery health with charge cycle count and maximum capacity percentage. You get a full printed report before and after the repair.

Most iPad screen repairs are done same day. Walk-ins welcome, nae appointment needed. Every repair comes with a 90-day warranty.

Common iPad Screen Problems

Cracked glass is what we see most. One drop from table height onto a hard floor is usually enough. Sometimes just the glass cracks and the display underneath still shows a perfect picture. Other times the LCD or OLED panel underneath is damaged too, showing black spots, coloured lines, or dead areas where nothing displays at all.

Touch not responding properly after a drop. The digitiser (touch layer) can be damaged even if the glass looks intact from the outside. Phantom touches (the screen registering taps you didn’t make) are particularly frustrating because the iPad opens apps on its own, types random characters, and behaves erratically. Dead zones where touch doesn’t register in specific areas are common too, or touch registering in a different position from where you actually tapped.

Screen lifting from the frame. The adhesive weakens over time, especially on older iPads or ones that have been in warm environments. Tablets left in direct sunlight, kept in hot cars, or used in kitchens near the cooker can develop this problem faster. A gap appears around the edge of the screen. This lets dust and moisture in and needs attention before it leads to further damage.

LCD bleed and bright spots. Pressure damage from a drop can cause the backlight to leak through, showing as bright patches around the edges of the screen. This is internal panel damage and won’t improve over time. The LCD assembly needs replacing.

On iPad Pro models with Face ID, a bad drop can also affect the Face ID sensors mounted in the top bezel. The TrueDepth camera system is delicate and sits right behind the glass. We test Face ID before and after every iPad Pro screen repair to confirm it’s working.

iPad Screen Repair (Standard iPad)

The standard iPad is the model we repair most. It’s Apple’s most popular iPad, sold in millions to families, schools, and businesses. If you’ve got “an iPad” and you’re not sure which model, it’s probably this one.

The standard iPad (7th gen onwards) uses a non-laminated LCD display. This means the glass and the LCD panel are two separate layers with an air gap between them. When the glass cracks, the LCD underneath is often fine. That’s good news for repair because sometimes we can replace just the glass digitiser without replacing the entire LCD. This keeps the cost down significantly.

You can tell the difference between a laminated and non-laminated display by looking at the screen from an angle. On a non-laminated screen, there’s a visible gap between the glass surface and the image underneath. On a laminated screen, the image looks like it’s painted right on the glass surface.

Earlier standard iPads (5th and 6th gen) have a similar non-laminated design. Parts are still available and the repair is straightforward.

The standard iPad is the most affordable iPad screen to repair. Given that these tablets are used heavily by families and often end up in the hands of kids, screen repairs are common. We see them every week.

After the repair, we run our diagnostic software to test touch response across every area of the screen. We check the cameras, speakers, the home button (on models that have one), and battery health. You get a full report showing everything works.

If you’re getting the screen repaired for a tablet the kids use, consider adding a case with raised edges and a screen protector. We stock both and can fit a protector before you leave. Prevention is cheaper than another repair.

iPad Air Screen Repair

The iPad Air uses Apple’s Liquid Retina display with a fully laminated screen. The glass and LCD are bonded together as one unit with no air gap. This gives better display quality (colours look richer, the image appears closer to the surface, and there’s less glare), but it means the full assembly needs replacing if either the glass or the LCD is damaged.

iPad Air screen repairs cost more than the standard iPad because of the laminated display technology. The screen assembly is more expensive to manufacture and source. The lamination process bonds the glass, digitiser, and LCD into a single component. You can’t separate them without destroying all three. Still far cheaper than buying a new iPad Air, which starts at around £600.

The iPad Air 4 and newer use USB-C instead of Lightning. The Air 5 has the M1 chip, the Air 6 has M2, making these powerful tablets that are absolutely worth repairing rather than replacing. They handle everything from basic browsing to video editing and gaming.

The Air models with Touch ID in the power button need the top button tested after screen repair to confirm it still works properly. We check this as part of our post-repair testing.

We stock screens for the most common iPad Air models. Most repairs are same day.

iPad Mini Screen Repair

The iPad Mini is the small one. Popular with folk who want a tablet they can hold in one hand, use for reading, or fit in a jacket pocket. Its compact size makes it a favourite for commuters and travellers.

Older iPad Mini models (1-4) use a non-laminated display similar to the standard iPad. These are affordable to repair and parts are still available.

The iPad Mini 5 and 6 use laminated displays like the iPad Air. The Mini 6 also switched to USB-C and moved to an edge-to-edge screen design with no home button. Screen repairs on the Mini 6 cost more than older models because of the laminated display and the edge-to-edge design that requires more precise fitting.

The Mini’s smaller size means it’s more likely to survive drops than the larger iPads simply because it weighs less and there’s less surface area to land on. But it still cracks when it hits a hard surface at the wrong angle. And the Mini 6’s flat edges mean there’s less bezel protection than the older curved-edge models.

We stock Mini screens for the most popular models. Less common older models might need a day to source parts.

iPad Pro Screen Repair

The iPad Pro is Apple’s premium tablet. 11-inch and 12.9-inch (now 13-inch) models with ProMotion 120Hz displays, M-series chips, Face ID, and Apple Pencil support. These are expensive devices, often costing well over a thousand pounds new. A screen repair makes a lot of financial sense.

iPad Pro screens are the most expensive iPad screens to replace. The ProMotion display technology with its 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, the larger size (especially the 12.9/13-inch), and the Face ID integration all add to the parts cost. But even the most expensive iPad Pro screen repair is a fraction of buying a new one. When you’ve spent over a grand on a tablet, paying a few hundred for a screen repair is the obvious choice.

Face ID on the iPad Pro uses a TrueDepth camera system with an infrared camera, flood illuminator, and dot projector mounted in the top bezel. During a screen repair, these components need careful handling. We disconnect them before screen removal and reconnect them to the new assembly. We test Face ID thoroughly before and after every Pro screen repair. If the original drop damaged the Face ID sensors as well as the screen, we’ll tell you before you commit to the repair.

Apple Pencil compatibility is maintained through the screen repair. The Apple Pencil works with the digitiser layer in the screen, and a new screen assembly includes a new digitiser. Your Apple Pencil will work exactly as before, including pressure sensitivity and tilt detection. The magnetic charging spot for Apple Pencil 2 is built into the frame, not the screen, so that continues to work too.

The iPad Pro 2024 models use OLED (tandem OLED) for the first time. Two OLED panels stacked together for brightness that matches or exceeds the previous LCD models. These screens are even more expensive than the LCD ProMotion panels on older Pro models. If you’ve got one of these and the screen’s cracked, bring it in. The repair is still worth it compared to Apple’s pricing or buying new.

How We Repair iPad Screens

Walk in with your iPad and we’ll assess the damage. Cracked glass only, or is the display underneath affected too? Touch working or not? We plug it into our diagnostic station for a pre-repair health check. This tells us the full picture before we open anything up.

We heat the edges of the iPad to soften the adhesive holding the screen to the aluminium body. The temperature needs to be precise. Too low and the adhesive doesn’t release. Too high and you risk damaging the LCD panel, the battery, or other components underneath. We use controlled heating equipment that maintains a consistent temperature around the perimeter.

Once the adhesive is soft, we work around the perimeter with thin, flexible separation picks while suction cups hold the screen stable. Slow and controlled, a few millimetres at a time. On iPads with home buttons, the home button flex cable is attached to the screen assembly and needs careful disconnection. On Face ID models, the Face ID module flex cables need the same care.

Once the old screen is out, we clean the frame thoroughly. All old adhesive removed, any glass fragments cleaned out, the seating surface inspected for debris. The frame needs to be perfectly clean for the new screen to sit flat and seal properly. Even a tiny fragment of glass left behind can put pressure on the new screen from inside and cause a crack.

We fit the new screen assembly, connect the flex cables, and seal it with fresh adhesive. Before fully closing it up, we power on and test. Touch response across the full screen at hundreds of test points. Cameras, speakers, Face ID (Pro models), home button (older models), battery health. Full diagnostic report.

Your data stays completely untouched. A screen replacement doesn’t affect anything stored on your iPad. Photos, apps, settings, Apple Pencil pairing, keyboard connections, everything stays where it is.

Most iPad screen repairs are done same day if we have the screen in stock. Common models (standard iPad 9th/10th gen, Air 4/5, Pro 11″ and 12.9″) are usually available. Less common or newer models might need a day or two to source.

iPad Screen Repair vs Buying New

iPads last a long time. Apple supports them with software updates for 5-6 years after release. A 3-year-old iPad running the latest iPadOS is still a perfectly capable device. Buying a new iPad because the screen cracked is like buying a new car because the windscreen chipped.

The price comparison makes repair an obvious choice at every level. A standard iPad costs around £350 new. A screen repair is a fraction of that. An iPad Air costs around £600. iPad Pro starts at 1,000 and goes well over 1,500 for the larger models with more storage. Even our most expensive iPad Pro screen repair saves you hundreds compared to buying new.

You keep everything when you repair: your apps, your photos, your saved passwords, your iCloud setup, your Apple Pencil pairing, your keyboard connection, your Focus modes, your home screen layout. Setting up a new iPad from scratch takes hours even with an iCloud backup. Not everything transfers perfectly, and you always end up re-entering passwords and reconfiguring settings for weeks afterwards.

There’s an environmental argument too. Manufacturing a new iPad uses significant resources and energy. Your iPad with a cracked screen is a perfectly good device that just needs a new piece of glass. Repairing it keeps it out of the electronic waste stream and extends its useful life by years.

If your iPad is very old (6+ years), still running, but out of software support, the repair might not make sense depending on the cost. We’ll tell you honestly. But for any iPad from the last 5 years, screen repair is almost always the right call.

Consider a case and screen protector after the repair. We stock both. If the iPad gets used by kids, a rugged case with a handle and a stand is worth the investment. Costs a fraction of another screen repair.

// FAQ

Common Questions

How much does iPad screen repair cost?

Depends on the model. Standard iPads are the most affordable. iPad Air and Mini with laminated displays cost more. iPad Pro is the most expensive because of the display technology and size. We quote on the spot.

How long does an iPad screen repair take?

Most done same day if we have the screen in stock. Usually a few hours. We’ll tell you the timeframe when you bring it in.

Will I lose my data?

No. Screen replacement doesn’t affect your data. Photos, apps, settings, everything stays exactly where it is.

Will Face ID still work after the repair?

On iPad Pro models with Face ID, we test it before and after the repair. If the original drop damaged the Face ID sensors, we’ll tell you. In most cases Face ID works fine after a screen replacement.

Will my Apple Pencil still work?

Aye. The Apple Pencil works with the digitiser in the screen, and the new screen includes a new digitiser. Your Pencil will work exactly as before.

Is it worth repairing an older iPad?

If it still gets software updates and works well, usually aye. iPads last years. A screen repair gives it another 2-3 years of use for much less than buying new. We’ll tell you if it’s not worth it.

Do you use quality replacement screens?

Aye. We use quality screens that match the original for touch response, colour accuracy, and brightness. We test every screen after fitting.

Can you repair a completely shattered iPad screen?

Aye. Even if the glass is in bits and the display is dead, we can replace the full screen assembly. The state of the old screen doesn’t affect the repair.
